coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning. welcome to mornings on two. it's saturday april 20th. >> there is relief in boston this morning. the city's week long nightmare is now over. the second bombing suspect, dzhokhar tsarnaev is in the hospital. he was captured after a two hour standoff. he was found hiding in a boat in a backyard. a few minutes we will go live to the hospital where the 19- year-old is being treated under heavy police security. there is also new information about his where abouts right after the bombing. also a live report on how the bay area will show support to the bombing victims. first let's go to claudine with a run down of the events. >> reporter: we want to take you through the event that led to the capture of the 19-year- old dzhokhar tsarnaev. we got a first look at the teen

who had been called suspect two at first. these are the areas that we are talking about. these are the first two pictures we got about 5:20 on thursday night. fbi released the images and video. suspect one was in the black hat, that was the older brother tamerlan tsarnaev. about five hours later we got reports of shots in cambridge. now let's talk about that. university police officer sean collier was shot at cambridge. this is the area. he later died. not long afterra that and still in cambridge we got the reports of a carjacking, police say the suspects car jacked a car, later released the owner. police were soon looking then for the suv and followed it west to water town. about 1:00 a.m. eastern time people reports shots of gun fire and explosions. then in a shoot out suspect number one, 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev was killed.

a transit officer richard donahue was also injured but dzhokhar tsarnaev escaped, that's the brother known as the man in the white hat. he got away and that's when this manhunt started and the area from water town to boston, that shelter in place was put in and for hours authorities went door to door with no luck. it seemed that the day would end without finding him and certainly that was frustrating for authorities. 6:00 p.m. eastern time the shelter in place was lifted in boston and the surrounding areas but then a short time later the reports of shots fired in water town and that's when that standoff started. then finally police confirmed they had their man saying the terror is over and justice was won. ? we are learning more about the suspect in police custody and his older brother killed thursday. alex savage is live with reaction and details about the suspects. >> reporter: good morning. the two suspected bombers are

chechens. their parents can't believe they could have done this and many friends say it doesn't make sense. especially those close to the younger brother. he was a wrestler in high school called popular. he went onto attend the university of massachusetts dartmouth and classmates saw him on campus this week after the bombings. friends don't understand why he would have turned on his adopted home but there are some people who believe that his brother, his older brother is to blame. >> from what i remember from what i know about him he was very sweet, kind, funny, smart, very smart, all round really good person. >> some believe the older brother, 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev forced his younger brother. he was killed during the manhunt. he was an amateur boxer,

married and he had a 3-year-old daughter. his wife identified by several news agencies as cathryn russell issued this statement saying we cannot begin to understand how how this horrible tragedy happened. our daughter has lot of the father of her child. in the aftermath of the horror we know that we never knew tamerlan tsarnaev. one of his aunts said that he had become a more devout muslim but none of his relatives believe he held extremist views. the father of the two suspected bombers said this was all a set up. >> someone framed them. i don't know who exactly did it but someone did. being cowards they shot the boy dead. >> and this morning we are learning more about how the younger bombing suspect spent those days after the marathon attack on monday. according to one report he worked out at the gym, then

went to an an on campus party. he even sent out several tweets, one of them seemed to reference the bombings and it read stay safe people. now coming up for you at 7:30 we will have more on this manhunt and will tell you yacht surviving suspect is not being read his rights just yet. >> as we said this week's events ended in the backyard of a home. the 19-year-old found injured and hiding in a boat. this morning we are live at the hospital in boston where the suspect is now being treated. >> reporter: the suspect is still here at the hospital and the latest information we have from police is that sort of the same on the condition that we have heard so far and one thing we are waiting to hear from, hospital officials say that they will send out a news release, first they had plans

for a news conference but that's not going to happen. it's important to note that people are out and about here in boston so it's a very different scene from just 24 hours ago. from quite tributes to the lives lost, to pure joy. people around boston found ways to mark the news that the reign of terror that gripped their city for a week was over. >> i just -- i feel like i can go back to school now and know i'm safe. >> reporter: that feeling comes from knowing the two suspects, wanted in connection to monday's attack on the boston marathon are no longer a threat. 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev died after gun fight with police early friday morning. his younger brother, 19-year- old dzhokhar tsarnaev was captured last night after a dramatic day long manhunt that shut down the area. friday night someone spotted the injured teen hiding out

inside a boat. after a shoot out with police he was loaded into this ambulance and taken to the same hospital where his brother died earlier in the day. the hunt was over. >> this was an absolutely intense investigation. i do say intense. as a result of that justice is being served for the victims of these terrible crimes. >> reporter: while these images of the attacks will continue to haunt the community, boston is waking up breathing a little easier. for law enforcement the work isn't done. >> the families of those killed so senselessly deserve answers. the wounded, some of whom now have to learn how to stand and walk and li again deserve answers. >> reporter: and speaking of that there is new information right now from a department of justice official saying that federal prosecutors are at the hospital right now. they are working on charges and apparently they have been here since last night.

also want to point out that many people still remembering of course the victims today. there are more than 50 of them from the boston marathon bombings that remain in the hospital right now. three of them are in critical condition. >> live for us in boston. thank you for that. a bay area law man may have played a role in the capture of the suspect. some of the swat tactics came from a training program developed by the sheriff of alameda. coming up how law enforcement may have indirectly helped police track down the accused killer. runners showing their support for boston this morning. we are live at ocean beach to tell you how victims are being honored by some who took part in the marathon. >> reporter: that's right. those runner who ran the marathon monday are both physically exhausted, mentally exhausted. they aren't expected to run today but show up in support of

other runners. i'm joined by donnie who organized the event. tell me what it means to get out and show your support and how strong is the running community? >> thank you for coming out and showing your support for the running community. it was a rough week for everybody. it really gets down to the heart of the -- the cruelty of this. you know attacking an event that is supposed to be just a joyous celebration of life and accomplishment and the running community is about that. we dedicate hours and our friends and family support us doing that to be able to run these types of events and the boston marathon is the height of american road racing. really throughout the world and all of our runner who were there were safe, their friends and family were safe and we felt that we needed to get together earlier this week to show support. we had a run to do that and we are pleased to be able to be here today to help that.

>> thank you so much. you are looking at video from a similar event yesterday. today the road runners say from 50 to 150 people will run together on this organized saturday morning run. they expect potentially more people than that since police arrested the second suspect last night. one runner i spoke to said it was the best conclusion to a horrible week of events that started with monday's attack. earlier this week as donnie said the club did another organized run in honor of the victims. they picked a route through san francisco's sunset district that spelled out the words boston. also a boy from martinez, a local boy was hurt in monday's explosion. he is still recovering in a boston hospital today following surgery. we are told he had his first meal yesterday. now i have a call into his family to find out the latest on his condition. runners expected to show up here at ocean beach around 7:45 so as they show up we will bring you more interviews and

hopefully speaking so some of those people who ran the marathon and having their perspective. coming up in the next half hour we will have more runners here at ocean beach. >> we have new information this morning about a homicide investigation in oakland. according to the paper a body found in a trash can in east oakland thursday may be a missing parolee his tattoos suggest he could be the missing parolee. today is the last day alameda county sheriff deputies will be on patrol in oakland after failing to come to terms with a new deal with the police department. officials say the two sides are at odds over who will pay worker's compensation costs. alameda is paying costs connected to the shooting of a deputy in oakland last month and asked the city to cover it in the case of any future incidents but that request was denied. >> absolutely a beautiful saturday sunrise and if you

the area. according to the usgf it was a 6.6. authorities in china are now saying it was a 7. the quake's depth of eight miles likely made the impact worse. it triggered landslides and thousands were injured when buildings fell down. a pregnant woman had to be rescued after her building collapsed. a soldier and a firefighter climbed through the small spaces to help bring her to safety. two hours lataer a 7-year-old was also rescued. >> new, in his weekly address the president praised the city of boston for standing up to terrorism. >> if anyone wants to know who we are, what america is, how we respond to evil and terror, that's it. >> the president said boston's spirit remained undaunted in the face of terror and the first lady returned to

washington after attending thursday's service in boston. this morning the president also singled out the actions of emergency responders running toward danger to help the bombing victims. officers stood and saluted the procession of fallen mit officer sean collier. property session passed by the mit station yesterday. officers were shaken and described him as the first person to step up and help someone. he was shot and killed thursday night following a run in with the alleged bombing suspects. >> the president has signed an emergency declaration for the texas town devastated by a fertilizer plant station. it caught fire and exploded late wednesday night. home and business owners have already filed more than 100 insurance claims. >> i was watching tv. then i heard a big, loud

explosion. then -- the ceiling collapsed. >> search crews have so far recovered 14 bodies. it's believed there may be more victims buried in the rubble. five volunteer firefighters and four emergency service workers among the dead and the cause the blast is still unknown. >> a camp ranger who was car jacked by christopher dorner said he plans to sue the city for the one million dollar reward for information leading to his capture. the man's attorney said his client's 911 call lead to where dornew was hiding. earlier, lapd said three former judges will decide if anyone can claim the award. they will also determine how it should be given out if at all. >> the richmond police department said they need help to find who shot and killed two teens in front of their home. the 16-year-old and 19-year-old were standing with a group of

people thursday night when someone opened fire. investigators say that two people walked up and fired more than a dozen shots, then jumped into a get away car. the brother and sister were not involved in any criminal activities. the san francisco giants are remembering a loved member of their family today. the wife of hall of famer willie mays died yesterday. she was 74. they had been married for 41 years. she had alzheimer's. >> the giants took time out of last night's game to honor the bombing victims. a symbol of sf and boston played on the big hd scoreboard along with the words together we are boston. a moment of silence was also observed for the victims. not everybody was happy at the park. because of increased security thousands of fans waited in long lines for more than an hour. every bag was checked and everybody coming in was searched. some said they were frustrated because they said it meant the bombers were successful.

>> what they wanted to do was they wanted to get in a situation where they would slow everything down for everybody. they have been successful in that. >> the public gets it. >> the police chief said it was a necessary precaution to keep people safe. extra police and dog units were also brought in for last night's game. >> a surprise delivery at a southern california zoom zoom zoo. >> and afternoon highs expected to soar above average. what you can expect coming up.

. the man working to shut down swatting is the latest victim. it's when police are called out about a crime at a home and when they arrive they find the call was a fake. yesterday police responded to senator ted lou's home. they had got what turned out to

be a fake call that the senator had shot his wife. the senator is pushing legislation that would punish swatters by making them cover the cost of the police response, it's about $10,000. it's the biggest day of the year for music fors. today is national record store day. customers will line up outside record stores this morning in hopes of buying new and reissued songs on good old vinyl. 700 stores will participate in the event including dozens right here in the bay area. >> the santa basha zoo is well coming a new addition. one of the giraffe's and visitors were the first to notice something was wrong and they alerted officials and she was taken to a pen where she gave birth. the baby is a boy and was named dane. get up on those little legs. the time of birth he weighed 156 pounds and was 6 feet 3- inches tall. spring does mean a lot of

>> for the first time in a week people are waking up without the fear of suspected terrorists on the loose. police captured 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. >> we are live with the latest developments. >> reporter: this dangerous manhunt paralyzed the boston area but this morning people there breathing easier. many also celebrating the capture of the second suspect from this week's marathon bombings. this was the scene in and around boston last night as people took to the streets, many cheering on the 9,000 plus law enforcement officers involved in the search for 19- year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. he was found hiding out in a boat that was parked in someone's backyard in water town massachusetts. teams took him into custody and he was eventually rushed to the hospital. authorities say that this second bombing suspect was

suffering a gun shot wound. he had been hit during a shoot out early friday morning that left his older brother tamerlan tsarnaev dead. he managed to escape during that gun battle and was on the run since then until an aalert neighbor noticed blood on his backyard boat and called police. >> he saw blood on a boat in the backyard. he then opened the tarp on the top of the boat and he looked in and saw a man covered with blood. he retreated and called us. . >> reporter: he remains in the hospital. we are learning investigators will soon try to question him without reading him his rights. they will invoke a rare exception to ask him about other potential explosives or possibly other suspects. we are learning how the bay area may have indirectly helped

them catch the suspect. boston area swat teams search for the suspect with tack i cans developed by the alameda county sheriff. he came up with the urban shield training program. every year 30 swat teams from around the world come here for 48 hours of intense training to deal with terrorist bombings and natural disasters. >> very nice to know that as they are going through this they were reflecting back on some of the training that they received here in the area. >> reporter: he was in communication with boston authorities. he said this week. some of the training situations played out during the manhunt. we will send it back over. >> happening now san francisco runners showing support for boston. we are live now at ocean beach to tell you how runner who took part in the marathon are honoring the victims. >> reporter: there are a lot of runners gathering here today. it's a beautiful day for a one. they are going to run in honor

of those victims and i'm here with someone who completed the race. he was done by two hours when he reached -- when the explosions happened. >> reporter: i had grabbed my bag by that point and i was going to attempt to change clothes out of my raining clothes. i was halfway done changing and i heard this big boom. i was like what was that? i thought okay -- i will keep changing. then suddenly you hear another boom not so loud. then at that point i got out of the tent and went toward the street where the finish line was where all the runners were coming through and i could see down the smoke and all. i didn't see any rubble, i didn't see debris so i didn't think it was a search and rescue kind of thing. i decided at that point to leave. all of the sudden this group of runners started running toward me. i started -- not panicking so i

ran away too. at that point the panic subsided so it wasn't such a -- it was -- at that point i just decided to leave. i wasn't going to ride the metro. i didn't think it was safe. i just walked the one hour back to my friend's house. >> reporter: what is the sense of relief now that they have caught the second suspect? >> it's a great sense of relief for the people who ran the marathon and for the city of boston and the state of massachusetts. we are glad that it ended as soon as it did. we owe a debt of gratitude to the law and not only that but also the first responders and my heart goes out to the victims of the tragic mess. >> reporter: what does it mean to get out here and run? >> the running community is a very tight community. we were the first victims of the -- of the bombs and to see

that there were some that ran from the finish line to the hospital to give blood and to see my friends reaching out to me and saying are you okay? and to have that friendship means a lot to us. it's a really special community, boston marathon is like no other marathon in the world. it's amazing to have that. >> reporter: thank you so much for talking to us. we will have more from him and other runner who are showing up today to run in support. that friendship we are speaking about here live. ktvu. >> a memorial is now in place at the finish line of the marathon. three crosses stand between the metal barriers to represent the three lives lost in the attack. flowers, cards and messages of hope have also been left behind. the bombing injured at least a hundred people with some of them requiring their legs to be removed. a bail hearing will be held for a man accused of sending

letter was a toxic letters to the president, a senator and a judge. paul kevin curtis is mentally ill his lawyers say and should be denied bail. his family said there is no evidence. they say he was wrongly identified. >> very told him quit getting on the e-mail and quit e- mailing all this stuff. just -- i have told him that. he believes so strongly that he has the right. >> prosecutors wanted to delay the hearing until they got results of a search of the home but that request was denied. they do think they found a package of interest in his home. family and friends remember a high school student with a vigil. they say they should be alive if she wasn't bullied and assaulted. she was assaulted at a party and a photograph started

circulating. survivors spoke out and urged victims to come forward and seek help. >> i was raped in my own home because my parents were out of town and i didn't tell anybody because i thought it was my fault. >> our heart, audrey. >> friends and family created bracelets in her favorite colors. they also started a foundation that will offer student scholarships and counsels. >> we are learning more about an accident involving a sheriff's deputy in haywood. it's a story we first brought you as breaking news yesterday morning. authorities say the deputy was not on the way to a call when he hit two people crossing the roadway on mission boulevard. a spokesman said that the deputy tried to revive one of the victims but he later died. the suspect pedestrian is being treated for serious injuries and is facing possible charges. >> the female is drunk and she was found under the influence of alcohol. we were able to get a statement

from her and also amount of narcotics was found on her person. >> authorities are looking into if the victims were in a crosswalk, investigators say they will look at video captured by surveillance cameras. small knives will be allowed on planes in five-days and in an effort to stop that some joined airport people to voice their opinions on capitol hill. >> it's horrible. it's a slap in the face to the families of september 11th to the traveling public as well. >> yesterday's movement urged congress to block the policy that lets small knives, two golf clubs and other items on a flight. the tsa said it's now nearly impossible to take down a jet liner with a knife and with the new rule it'll be able to focus on more serious state safety threats. if you have a flight scheduled out this weekend be prepared for delays. one of the runways closed at

>> there is relief in boston this morning. the city's week long nightmare is over. the second bombing suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev is in the hospital in serious condition. he was captured last night after a two hour standoff and police shoot out. he was hiding in a boat stored in a backyard. he is currently being treated under heavy police security. we also have new information regarding the suspect and reaction from his relatives, also this morning a live report on how the bay area will show support to the bombing victims. in boston victims are being honored with a growing memorial. it's located near the finish line of the marathon where the two bombs went off on monday morning. three crosses now stand between the metal barriers to represent the three lives lost in the attack. flowers, cards and messages of hope have also been left behind. the bombing injured at least 100 people, some of the victims losing limbs. >> after last night's arrest

of dzhokhar tsarnaev the president held a press conference apt the white house. he added to his message in this weekly address in which he praised the city for standing up to terrorism. >> if anyone wants to know who we are, what america is, how we respond to evil and terror, that is it. >> the president said boston's spirit remained undaunted in the face of terror. he and the first lady returned after attending thursday's service in boston. in this morning's address he also sing manied out the actions of emergency responders who ran toward the danger to help bombing victims. and as the city of boston heals the question for many is what happens next. we start our team coverage in water town massachusetts outside the hospital where the suspect is now being treated.

>> reporter: we are learning that the fbi is still searching the area where the suspect was taken in to custody. here at the hospital the latest from police is that the suspect is still in serious condition. >> people lined streets friday night cheering for the thousands of officers who ended the reibn of terror that gripped their city for nearly a week. >> i feel like we can go back to school now and know i'm safe. >> reporter: that renewed feeling of safety that comes knowing the two suspects wanted in connection to the attacks on the boston marathon are no longer a threat. tamerlan tsarnaev died after a gun fight with police. his younger brother dzhokhar tsarnaev was captured after a day long manhunt. someone saw him hiding inside a

boat. >> he saw blood on a boat in the backyard. he opened the tarp and he looked in and saw a man covered with blood. he retreated called us. >> reporter: after a shoot out with police he was loaded in to this ambulance and taken to the same hospital where his brother died earlier in the day. the same hospital where so many of the victims were rushed in the moments following monday's blast. while these images of the attacks will continue to haunt the community, boston is waking up breathing easier. for law enforcement the work isn't over. him will continue to be an ongoing and active investigation as we look for all the details, continue to look at a lot of evidence and file our formal charges. >> reporter: and according to a department of justice official federal prosecutors have been here at the hospital since last night working on charges and apparently those charges could

attended the university of massachusetts. in fact he had been seen on campus just this week following the bombings at the marathon. his relatives this morning say they don't understand why he would turn on his adopted home and his uncle was angry with them. >> he put shame on the family, our family. the faon the entire chechen culture. >> reporter: the older brother was killed during the manhunt. he was an amateur boxer, married a 3-year-old daughter. his wife was fayed by several news agencies as cathryn russell and they were stunned by the news. now this morning we are learning he was interviewed in 2011 to see if he had terrorist ties but they found nothing incriminating. one of his aunts said he had become more devout new they don't believe he had extremist views. >> my first call to fbi they

dining room and then i heard a big, loud explosion. and then the ceiling collapsed on top of me. >> search crews have recovered the bodies of 14 people. it's believed there may be more buried in the rubble. five volunteer firefighters and four emergency service workers among the dead. the cause of the blast is unknown. >> we are learning more about a fatal accident involving a sheriff's deputy in haywood. it's a story we first brought you as breaking news yesterday morning. authorities say the deputy was not on the way to a call when he hit two people crossing the roadway on mission boulevard. a spokesman for the sheriff's department said the deputy tried to revive one of the victims but he later died. a second pedestrian is being treated for serious join ires and is facing charges. >> the female is intoxicated was found under the influence of alcohol. we were able to get a statement from her and also, amount of

narcotics was found on her. >> authorities are now looking in to it the victims were in a crosswalk. investigators say they will look at video caught by surveillance cameras in the area. >> richmond police say they need help finding whoever shot and killed a brother and sister as she stood in front of their home. the 16-year-old and 19-year-old were standing with a group of people thursday night when someone opened fire. investigators say two people walked up and fired more than as dozen shots and then jumped into a car. police say the brother and sister were not involved in criminal activities. >> could be that someone else in the group was. we just don't know. they were standing outside with other family members and friends just talking. >> police say the gunman got into a dark blue vehicle. . >> family and friends remembered a high school student with a vigil. >> greatest friend i could

. the terror is over and the suspect is in custody. welcome back. >> good morning. we want to take you through the event that led to the capture of dzhokhar tsarnaev. thursday night we got that first look at this teen who had just been called suspect number two. let's show you the first pictures that we got. these are the surveillance photograph that were released at 5:20 on thursday night

suspect one, the older brother tamerlan tsarnaev. about five hours later there were reports of shots fired over in cambridge. that was 10:30 p.m. earn time when an mit police officer, sean collier was found shot in his car and he later died. not long after that more developments. cambridge police say that two suspects car jacked a suv and then later released the owner unharmed. police were soon looking for that suv and followed west to water town. that's when the attention focused over there. abouta 1:00 a.m. eastern time police reported gun shots and then an explosion and then there was a shoot out with police. at that point suspect number one, 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev was killed. a transit officer, richard donahue was injured. the 19-year-old suspect, the man in the white hat, dzhokhar tsarnaev, he got away.

that's when this manhunt got stronger and that's when all the attention started focusing on this area. at eight on friday a shelter in place was put into place from boston all the way to water town as authorities were going door to door with no luck. it seemed that the day would just end without finding him. at six that's when they called off the shelter in place. at six a short time later there were reports of this shots fired and we had a standoff in water town. then finally boston police were able to confirm that they had their man. he was in custody. boston police tweeted the terror is over. justice has won. >> we are also looking further into the suspect now in police custody and his older brother who was killed thursday night. alex is live for us. >> reporter: good morning. the parents of the two suspected bombers say there is no way they could have carried out this deadly attack. in boston people are celebrating as that second brother was finally captured

everybody is safe. >> reporter: runner was san francisco's road runners clock had a moment of silence in honor of victims of the bombings before taking off this morning. they also took the time to hug each other and check in on those who recently return from the marathon. some completed the race before the two bombs exploded. one runner i spoke to was scheduled to cross the finish liana round the time the bombs exploded. >> it was strange because i had planned to cross right at that time. i was glad i was slow that day. >> reporter: all of the runners and family of the people in the club are safe, i'm told none of them were hurt in monday's incident. we are told the martinez boy who was struck monday is still recovers in a boston hospital. we are told he had his first meal in the hospital yesterday. we have calls in to his family. again those runners making their way through san francisco

american muslims to get out is we stand with boston and are mourning the terrorist attack, the victims of the attack. >> she also said that there have been two reports of hate incidents here in the bay area since monday things like name calling. >> we have new information this morning about a homicide investigation in oakland. according to the tribune a body found in a trash can in east oakland thursday may be a missing parolee. police say the man's tattoos suggest he could be the man. he has been missing since april 5th and he got into a car accident while being pursued by chp. today is the last day alameda county sheriff deputies will be on patrol in oakland after failing to come to terms with a new deal. they say the two sides are at odds offer who will pay worker's compensation costs for deputies injured on the job. alameda is paying costs connected to the hoot shoots of

a deputy. they asked the city to cover it in the case of future incidents but that request was denied . >> this morning safety regulators are investigating the death of a glass factory worker near santa rose a. the accident happened yesterday at thermal sun glass products near the airport. deputies say the 21-year-old was using a cart to move several hundreds pounds of sheet glass when it tipped over on him. . >> unemployment rate is it is hats lowest level in five- years. the unemployment rate was 9.4% last month. that's down from 9.6% in february. it's also well below march of last year. even sot state's unemployment rate is still higher than the national rate. this is what the numbers look like across the bay area. solano has the highest unemployment rate. marin has the lowest in the bay

selflessly, compassion and unafraid. >> the president said boston's spirit remains undaunted. he and the first lady return to washington after attending thursday's service in boston. in the address the president also singled out the actions of emergency responder who ran toward the danger to help bombing victims. news agencies out of boston report there are 53 victims still in hospitals this morning. three patients remain in critical condition. alex has been sorting through the new information coming into the newsroom and joins us now with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. in the boston area this morning they are breathing in relief to be sure. a massive manhunt ended last night as the second of two suspected bombers was captured alive. from tribute to the lives lost to excitement. people from around boston found weapons to mark the news that

the reign of terror was over. >> i feel like i go back to school now and know that i'm stay. >> reporter: that sense comes from knowing the two suspects wanted in connection with monday's attack on the boston marathon are no longer a threat tamerlan tsarnaev died after a gun night. his younger brother was captured after a day long hunt. someone saw him hiding out inside a boat. after a shoot out with police he was loaded in to thissance ambulance and taken to the same hospital where his brother died earlier in the day. >> this was an absolutely intense investigation. i do say a intense investigation. as a result of that, justice is being served for the victims of the terrible crimes. >> reporter: while the images of the attacks will continue to

haunt the community, boston is waking up breathing easier. for law enforcement the work is not done. >> the families of those killed so senselessly deserve answers. the wounded, some of whom now have to learn how to stand and walk and live again, deserve answers. >> reporter: now we are waiting to learn what charges will come for that surviving suspect and what he will ba ryaned. today he remains in the hospital. we know he does have serious injuries and we are expecting further updates on his condition will come through the fbi. we know this teen has not yet been read his rights and in fact authorities are invoking a rare public safety exception in order to question him about other potential explosives and possible other suspects. >> it was a quiet moment as officers stood and saluted the procession of fallen mit

officer sean collier. procession passed by the police station yesterday afternoon. fellow officers were shaken and described collier as the first person to step up. he was shot and killed thursday night after a run in with the boston suspects. >> we want to take you back through the event that led to the capture of the 19-year-old. now on thursday night we got our first look at this teen who had first -- just called suspect number two. let's take you back through the pictures we first had. images that show him in the white cap and then in man in the black cap that has been identified as the 26-year-old brother. this is about 5:20 on thursday when police released the images again. suspect number one, the man in the black hat turned out to be the older brother -- 10:30 p.m. we had five hours later reports of shots fired in cambridge and that's when this police officer sean collier was then shot in

his car and he did die. not long after that still in cambridge, we got reports of this carjacking, police say the two suspects car jacked a suv and then later released the owner. police were soon looking for that suv and followed it west over to water town. about one eastern time people reported hearing gun shotos and explosions. then there was this shoot out with authorities. that happened in suspect number two or suspect number one, 26- year-old tamerlan tsarnaev was killed and a transit officer, was critically injured. somehow the 19-year-old got away. he fled that scene somehow on the run. so much happened in the next few hours, by eight on friday, water town to boston all put in lockdown and for hours authorities were going door to

door with in luck. it seemed that it was all going to end without finding him until 6:00 p.m. eastern time when officials lifted the shelter in place order and then after that reports of shots fired over in water town and that standoff started. it took a little bit after that but then at 8:45, eastern time, the suspect was in custody. police said they had their man. justice was won. >> the bay area remembering boston coming up at 9:15, the running community here is showing its support with several events this weekend. the san francisco giants took time out of last night's game to honor the marathon bombing victims, reinvolving symbol of sf and played -- along with the words together we are boston. a moment of silence was also held. not everybody was inside the park. that's because of increased security. thousands of fans had to wait in long lines for more than an

hour. every bag was checked and everybody coming in was searched. some people said they were zoophorus straighted because -- frustrated. >> what they wanted to do was they wanted to get in a situation where they would slow everything down for everybody. they have be successful in that. >> san francisco police chief said it was a necessary precaution to keep people safe, extra police and dog units were also brought in for the game. many in boston will be celebrating the capture of the last bombing suspect by watching the red sox. sox are set to host the kansas city royals, at 10:10 pacific time. it'll be the first home game of fenway park. >> in other news, police say they need help to find who shot and killed two teens in front of their home. the two were standing with a group of people thursday night when someone opened fire.

for today. temperatures slightly warmer for your afternoon. >> we are following developing news for you out of china where a powerful quake has killed more than 150 people. authorities expect that death toll to rise. we will show you how much force has brought. it was a 6.6 quake. authorities in china are saying this was a 7.0. it had a shallow depth which likely made it stronger. it did trigger landslides and thousands of people were hurt when buildings fell down during what witnesses call 60 secs of shaking. take a look at this video. that's a pregnant woman who was trapped in this building and that had be rescued. a soldier and a firefighter you see them. they are just climbing through the small spaces and they were able to bring her to safety. two hours later a 7-year-old was rescued from that same building. >> the president has signed an

emergency declaration town devastated by a fertilizer plant explosion. the company located in the town of west caught fire and exploded late wednesday flight. the presidential order will provide federal aid to the area. home and business owners have already filed more than 100 insurance claims. >> i was watching tv in the dining room. i heard a big, loud explosion, and then the ceiling collapsed. >> search crews have so far recovered the bodies of 14 people. rescuers believe there may be more victims buried in the rubble. five volunteer firefighters and four emergency service workers are among the dead and the cause of that blast is still unknown. >> back to the continuing coverage of the boston bombings. the running community is holding several events to show support for boston. we are live at one of them at ocean beach with runner who have returned from boston.

>> reporter: you can see them over my shoulder. they around 7:45 doing routes around the city up to 18 miles, some of them with the running club we spoke to are survivors of the marathon. we spoke to them and they say that today'sa run is a way to heal and move forward. >> i think it'll help me process it. i have been numb. >> >> reporter: several were in boston competing in the marathon. we are told they are all safe and nobody was hurt. in the moments following the two explosions, the group worked quickly to find members and organizers say with in 45 minutes everybody was act accounted for. now that police have arrested the second suspect many are ready to train for next year's marathon. they say the attack is pushing them to train even harder. some still want to obtain thee lit title of marathon finisher.

family of the 11 -year-old who we heard katie talking about. he was injured in the explosion. >> a camp ranger who was car jacked said he plans to sue the city for the one million dollar reward for the information leading to the capture. the man's attorney say said his call lead police to dorner. earlier this month lapd said three former judges will have to decide if anyone can lay claim to that reward and they will set up a claims process. the judges will also determine how that reward should be given out. new this morning the city is hoping someone will pick up the tab from the president's fundraising -- he raised more than $3 million but the visit got the city for police and other services. town leaders plan to send the invoices to the white house.

hospital where the suspect is. there is this heavy police presence, they are guarding the door. the latest from police is that the suspect is still in serious condition. i have to tell you it's starting to feel a little more like boston here. there is a red sox game going on this afternoon. people are out and act walking on the streets, there are cars on the streets, this has been a long week. from tributes to the lives lost. to pure joy. people around boston found ways to mark the news that the reign of terror that gripped their city for a week was over. that renewed feeling of safety comes knowing the two suspects wanted in connection to monday's deadly attack on the boston marathon are no longer a threat. tamerlan tsarnaev died after a gun fight with police early friday morning. his younger brother dzhokhar tsarnaev was captured last night after a dramatic day long manhunt that shut down the area. >> because of that

extraordinary cooperation by all of the law enforcement resources, who brought their a game, we have a -- a suspect in custody. >> reporter: the manhunt may be done but the search for a motive is just starting. even friends of the suspect say he is the only one who may be able to unlock some of the mysteries around this case. >> for the sake of everybody out here, the sake of the families, everybody affected, we need questions answered. he is the one to it. >> reporter: its been a week that changed lives forever. a week nobody will forget. in the middle of so much pain, there have been moments of hope. >> that's what we will remember from this week. that's what we will have. the stories of kindness, resolve, generosity and love. >> reporter: and we are learning a little more about

this suspect. university official where he attended school said that the suspect was on campus every day after the bombing up until about thursday. he attended classes and he even went to some parties. >> all right. thank you so much from that report from boston. now that 19-year-old suspect is in custody investigators are searching for a motive. they say tonight know why the two brothers allegedly attacked hundreds of people they didn't know. alex is live with more on what we are learning about them. >> reporter: good morning. the younger brother was a popular college student. the oldoer brother was an amateur boxer. friends and relatives say they can't believe this pair could have carried out this deadly attack. relatives say that the 19-year- old and 26-year-old were devout muslims but never held extremist views. though we are learning older brother was interviewed in 201

ability possible terrorist ties. they are chechens who moved here a decade ago as refuges. they lived in the boston area, the younger attending dartmouth. one report said he went to the gym, even attend a party with friends, and now friends and family say they have a lot of questions. >> first reaction was anger. how could this happen? how could this do this? for what? for the sake of what? what belief? what prompted them to this? >> the older brother was married and had a 3-year-old daughter. he dropped out of college after three semesters and he said in a magazine i don't have a single american friend and i don't understand them.

now he did travel to russia just of the last year and investigators looking at that trip to see if the suspected boston bomber may have met with extremists there or received training. live in the newsroom. >> boston area swat teams searched with tack i cans developed by the alameda county sheriff. he came up with urban shield. it's a training program and every year 30 swat teams from around the world come for 48 hours of intense, training to deal with terrorist bombings and natural disasters. >> very nice to know that as they are going through this they were -- they were reflecting back on some of the training they received here in the area >> the sheriff was in communication with boston authorities this week and some of the training situations played out during the manhunt. >> we have new information this morning about a homicide

investigation in oakland. according to the oakland tribune a body found in a trash can may be a missing parolee. police say the man's tattoos suggest he could be the missing man. he has been missing since april 5th when he got into a car accident while being pursued by officers. family and friends remembered a student with a vigil. >> greatest person i could have asked for. >> family say audrey would still ba live if she hadn't been bulllied and assaulted. they said she committed suicide after a photograph of her being sexually assaulted started circulating online. survivor of assault urged victims to come forward. >> i was raped in my own home because my parents were out of town and i didn't tell anybody because i thought it was my fault. >> last night friends and

family created bracelets in her favorite colors in her memory. they also started a foundation that will offer student scholarships and counseling. >> we are learning more about a deadly accident involving a deputy. it's a story we first brought you as breaking news yesterday morning. the deputy wasn't on the way to a call when he hit two people crossing the roadway. a spokesperson for the sheriff's department said the deputy tried to revive one of the victims but he died. >> the female is intoxicated was found under the influence of alcohol. we were able to get a statement from her and also an amount of narcotics was found on her person. >> authorities looking into it the victims were in a crosswalk. investigators will also look at video. federal investigators have released a video showing the event that led up to the big fire at the richmond refinery.

businesses made donations and to the family of an 11-year-old from marte who was hurt. >> campus police at cal states say they were worried about a copy cat, attack. schools considered soft targets because of the large amount of people in condensed areas. a bomb threat forced the evacuation of cal state la on thursday. the system includes 23 schools with about 400,000 students. a bail hearing set to continue monday for a mississippi man accused of sending letters containing a toxic subdance to the president, a senator and a judge. the united states attorneys say paul kevin curtis is mentally ill. family members say there is no evidence linking him to the letters. this he say he was wrongly identified as a suspect because of his online postings.

effectively been stopped in the quad cities in iowa. >> a look at some of the top stories we have been following. this is a live picture. it's from outside fenway park. red sox fans headed back to the ballpark. this game was postponed yesterday because of the manhunt. it'll be the first home game. bomb sniffing dogs are at the park as a precaution. boston police say a water town resident went outside for a cigarette and saw bombing suspect 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev hiding in his parked boat that had a tarp on it. the teen was eventually caught after a two hour standoff. he is in the hospital listed in serious condition. richmond police are looking for the person who shot and killed a brother and sister. the 16-year-old and 19-year-old were standing with a group of people thursday night when someone opened fire.

today is the last day alameda county sheriff deputies will be on patrol in oakland after failing to come to terms on a new deal with the police department. officials say that the two sides are at odds offer worker compensation costs. >> the 420 party will come with high costs, thousands are expected to gather and smoke marijuana at hippie hill this afternoon. april 20th normally known as the day celebrated by people around the country and world as the day to get high. since the event has no organizer officials say city taxpayers will be picking up the bill. the park department estimates it'll spend $10,000 to clean up and repair damage. san francisco will be cleaning and greening this weekend in early celebration for earth day. officials are joining a community clean up team this morning. they have been going for just under an hour.
